Our Story
Training baby llamas for events on Maui

We’re Sam and Christine Heidema, the husband-and-wife team behind Maluhia Llamas and Kula Cottontail Farm—home to our cherished llamas, alpacas, angora rabbits, and chickens.

Both of us grew up as missionary kids in Papua New Guinea. At 18 we went our separate ways: Sam headed to the mainland United States to earn a degree in structural engineering while Christine spent a decade traveling the world as a scuba-diving instructor in the tourism industry. Years later we reconnected, married, and settled in Hawaiʻi, where we could each pursue our vocations.

Christine is a fiber artist, so it wasn’t long before we began acquiring and breeding animals with exquisitely soft, luxurious wool that she spins into yarn and crafts into high-end garments. As our herd grew, we discovered that the llamas thrive on having a purpose, and they spread joy wherever they go.

That realization inspired us to launch Maluhia Llamas, sharing these extraordinary animals (and the incredible happiness they bring) with the wider community. We’re grateful to God for placing them in our lives and giving us the opportunity to delight others through them. All glory goes to Him.

We can’t wait to introduce you to our remarkable herd.
